Swissair

Swissair AG/S.A. (German: Schweizerische Luftverkehr-AGFrenchS.A. Suisse pour la Navigation Aérienne) was for many years the national airline of Switzerland.

It was formed from a merger between Balair and Ad Astra Aero (To the Stars), in 1931. For most of its 71 years, Swissair was one of the major international airlines and known as the “Flying Bank” due to the financial stability of the airline, causing it to be regarded as a Swiss national symbol and icon. The airline thrived into the 1980s, when it was one of the “Seven Sisters”[citation needed] of Western European commercial aviation. It was headquartered at Zurich Airport and in Kloten.

In 1997 the Swissair Group was renamed SAirGroup (although it was again renamed Swissair Group in 2001), with four subdivisions: SAirlines (to which Swissair, CrossairBalair and FlightLease belonged), SAirServices, SAirLogistics and SAirRelations.

Burdened by over-expansion due to the controversial “Hunter Strategy” in the late 1990s and after the economic downturn following the September 11 attacks, Swissair’s assets dramatically lost value, grounding the already-troubled airline in October 2001. The airline was kept alive until 31 March 2002 by the Swiss Federal government.

On 1 April 2002 successor airline Swiss International Air Lines was founded on the base of former Crossair, taking over most of the routes, planes and staff of the former Swissair. Today, The SAirGroup company still exists and is in the process of being liquidated. Swiss International Air Lines was taken over by the German airline Lufthansa in 2005.

Hand baggage

Everything important on board

Travelling with hand baggage is practical and efficient. On short trips, it enables you to dispense with checked baggage. Please note, though, that there is only limited space on board, and that certain items are not allowed on board.

Hand baggage regulations

  • SWISS Economy
    1 x max.8 kgDimensions max. 55 x 40 x 23 cm

  • Your hand luggage must be stored in the overhead locker or under the seat in front. Please observe the maximum permitted dimensions and weight for hand baggage.

Please note that the rules are implemented consistently when boarding. Hand baggage that is too big or too heavy will be taken at the gate and carried as checked baggage, for which there is a charge. These charges are considerably higher at the gate, and can only be paid by Maestro or credit card.

Further information on the overview of charges for checked baggage

A foldable garment bag with the maximum dimensions of 57 x 54 x 15 cm can also be accepted as hand baggage.

Countries such as Italy and the USA have stricter rules regarding hand luggage. Passengers in First and Business Class with a second item of hand luggage must check it in if travelling to those countries.

THAI is a founding member of the Star Alliance. The airline is the largest shareholder of the low-cost carrier Nok Air with a 39 percent stake,  and it launched a regional carrier under the name Thai Smile in the middle of 2012 using new Airbus A320 aircraft.

From its hub at Suvarnabhumi Airport, THAI (including subsidiaries) flies to 84 destinations in 37 countries, using a fleet of over 90 aircraft. The airline was once the operator of two of the world’s longest non-stop routes between Bangkok and Los Angeles and New York City, but due to high fuel prices, the withdrawal of aircraft, luggage weight limits and rising airfares, the airline abandoned all non-stop US services in 2012 indefinitely. As of 2013, services between Bangkok and Los Angeles were served via Incheon International Airport near Seoul, however, it ended its service to the US on 25 October 2015. THAI’s route network is dominated by flights to Europe, East Asia, and South/Southwest Asia, though the airline serves five cities in Oceania. THAI was the first Asia-Pacific airline to serve London Heathrow Airport. Among Asia-Pacific carriers, THAI has one of the largest passenger operations in Europe.

It operates services to 18 domestic and 197 international destinations in 78 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, using a fleet of more than 270 aircraft. Lufthansa is one of the five founding members of Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance, formed in 1997. The name of the company is derived from Luft ‘air’ and Hansa, the Hanseatic League.

Besides its own passenger airlines Austrian Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings including Germanwings (referred to in English by Lufthansa as its Passenger Airline Group), Deutsche Lufthansa AG owns several aviation-related companies such as Lufthansa Technik as part of the Lufthansa Group. Combined with its subsidiaries, the group has 656 aircraft, as of February 2016, making it one of the largest passenger airline fleets in the worldIn 2014, the group carried over 106 million passengers.

Lufthansa’s registered office and corporate headquarters are in Cologne. The main operations base, called Lufthansa Aviation Center (LAC), is at Lufthansa’s primary hub at Frankfurt Airport.    The majority of Lufthansa’s pilots, ground staff, and flight attendants are based there.  Lufthansa’s secondary hub is Munich Airport.

Lufthansa was a state-owned enterprise (and flag carrier) until 1994.  In 2014, 60% of Lufthansa’s shares were held by institutional investors. The remaining 40% were held by individual stock owners.  Since 1970, Lufthansa has involved its employees in profit sharing, giving them the opportunity to choose between cash and preference shares. When Lufthansa was privatised, employees received more than 3% of its shares.

Unaccompanied baggage

We offer an unaccompanied baggage service on most routes. This service may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to paying excess baggage rates. You must hold a valid international ticket (for travel on any airline) between the origin and destination airports.

The baggage must be consigned at the freight terminal before your flight and can only consist of personal clothing and articles including books, portable music instruments and portable sporting equipment.

Unaccompanied baggage is carried on a ‘space available’ basis to the destination, and not necessarily on the same flight you’re travelling on.

Note: you may be required to pay handling or government customs and quarantine charges at the destination for your unaccompanied baggage.

Note: The USA Transportation Security Administration (TSA) have placed restrictions on uplifting personal effects and household goods to the USA. These restrictions also apply to unaccompanied baggage accepted as freight to the USA.

For more information call 13 12 13 within Australia or your local Qantas Freight office.

Packing your baggage

All contents of your baggage need to be packed securely and appropriately. Do not pack valuables, essential medication or important documents in your checked baggage

You must ensure each item of checked baggage is labelled with your name, address and contact details. We recommend that you lock your baggage. However, it may be necessary for governments, airports or their contractors to open and inspect your baggage as part of the security screening process. If your baggage is locked, and you aren’t present when it’s necessary to open it, the lock may be broken by security screeners.

For passengers travelling to or from the United States, the USA Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises that you can avoid the need for locks to be broken by using a TSA recognised locking mechanism, which can be opened by the TSA. Visit the TSA website for further information.

If you choose to utilise baggage-wrapping services offered at some airports, you should allow additional time to complete this process before check-in. If security wrapping needs to be removed for inspection by governments, airports or their contractors as part of the security screening process it will not be replaced.

We’re unable to advise you at the time of check-in whether your baggage will need to undergo additional security checks.

Checked baggage: need to know

Acceptance of your baggage is subject to compliance with our:

Note that even if your baggage meets the above requirements, we may refuse to carry it if it’s not properly and securely packed. Finally, remember that no single item of checked baggage can exceed 32kg (70lb) and all cabin baggage must fit under the seat in front of you or in an overhead locker, including musical instruments.

General Information

We recommend that you pack your belongings in proper suitcases to avoid damage to your luggage or its contents during its transportation.

In order to prevent baggage handlers from getting hurt and troubles at some airports, we suggest that your checked baggage do not exceed 23kg(50lb), otherwise you may be asked to repack, transfer some of your belongings into different bag or pay excess baggage fee. Bags over 32kg(70lb) must be repack because it is too heavy for handler to lift. Some special items over 32kg or oversize such as medical equipment, pets, musical instruments, sporting equipment, camera equipment or household items should be pre-advised to EVA Air Reservation office and get approval at least 24 hours ahead of departure. Remind you EVA Air reserves the right to refuse carriage of such items on board the aircraft. Please aware that the weight limit restriction refers to a single item and will not affect the baggage allowance or excess baggage fee of your trip.

At the check-in counter, please make sure that your baggage is tagged to the correct flight and destination. The numbers of baggage receipt and your checked baggage should be identical as well.

All checked baggage must be screening by X-ray. Such security check can be performed either before or after a passenger has finished the check-in process. If this is done beforehand, the passenger will be requested to stand by at the X-ray checkpoint until his/her baggage is clear. If the passenger is not present at the checkpoint, the baggage could be opened for inspection or deny for transportation without passenger’s consent. According to Paragraph 1, Article 105 of Taiwan’s  Civil Aviation Act, spreading any false message regarding aviation safety will be against the law and cause inconvenience for your journey.

Please remember that a name tag in English format will be helpful if your baggage is lost. It will speed up the airline’s ability to locate your baggage. For your convenience, EVA offers blank name tags at the check-in counter for free. You will take sole responsibility for items’ lost and damage if is packed in carton boxes or paper shopping bags. Please do not pack fragile articles, valuable items, important document, medicines, and keys. Airline assumes no liability for loss, damage or delay to certain articles during delivery.

Liability

EVA Air’s liability is limited for loss of, damage to, or delay in delivery of any perishable property and baggage with inadequate packing, nor for damage to or damage caused by fragile articles, liquids, or perishables. EVA Air’s liability for the following items is also limited in accordance with the relevant convention governing international air travel: medicines, orthotics (medical support devices), money, jewelry, silverware, negotiable papers, securities, business/personal documents, spirits, books/manuscripts, optics, keys, publications, blueprints, paintings/works of arts, sound reproduction equipment, business samples, artistic items, irreplaceable items, photographs, business equipment, natural fur products, antiques, heirlooms, collectibles, artifacts, precious metals/stones, photographic/audio/video equipment and related items, computer hardware/software and electronic components/equipment…etc. Even though EVA Air does accept the items listed above in checked baggage, EVA Air’s liability may be limited of lost or damages.

Baggage handling

Before you pass through immigration, please make sure the following points had been verified:

  • You have correct baggage receipt(s).
  • Your checked baggage has been tagged to the correct destination.
  • Your baggage has been screened by X-ray at a security checkpoint and cleared to proceed (Passengers are required to make sure his/her all check-in baggage through X-ray without any problem, e.g. airports in Taiwan).

EVA Air is authorized to inspect your baggage whether you are present or not during baggage examination and can be refused for transport it if you are absent. Baggage that has passed through security-inspection points will be moved to the aircraft loading area by either an automated baggage-handling system or, in some airports or conditions, by baggage handlers. Most baggage is loaded into a special container that requires it to be stacked. If any attachments such as handles or straps are not properly stored, damage could possibly occur to the baggage during the transportation process. You are encouraged to use appropriate baggage and to remove any unfixed or protruding attachments.

EVA Air and its agents will handle all baggage with diligent care. Please understand that baggage might get stained, dented or scratched under certain circumstances during transportation. To minimize the damage, you may choose to wrap your baggage with plastic-film and do not check-in expensive brand-name baggage.

Baggage claim areas

Sequence and priority for unloading the baggage is determined by the cabin class and loading position. Please allow 20-60 minutes for your baggage to be delivered to the claim area. To ensure that you don’t take someone else’s identical or similar appearance baggage by mistake, before you take it from the baggage carousel , please double-check the tag number on the suitcase if is the same as your baggage receipt. The baggage clearance information at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Songshan International Airport (TSA) in Taiwanis.
